The proposed logo stems from the context of Scotland, where it captures the Thistle, the national flower of Scotland and one of its most recognisable symbols. Since King Alexander III, it has been Scotland’s national emblem. The Scottish Thistle is the oldest recorded National Flower and probably one of Scotland’s most well-known and easily recognised symbols.
Positive connotations are attached to the flower in Celtic nations, and it is seen as a sign of resiliency, strength, resolve, protection, and pride . In summary, the Thistle means Excellence.
A shield design communicates stability, protection, longevity, tradition, solidity, toughness, boldness, confidence, no retreat, and no surrender; this reflects the importance of education, learning and capacity building in protecting individuals and organisations.
Hence, the shield and the thistle combination has been deemed the closest representation of the Dundee Centre of Business Excellence vision and remit.
