Support for our community following rioting in UK cities

Dear Students and Colleagues,

I am writing to you following the acts of violence and thuggery that have occurred in parts of the UK over the last weeks.

I’m certain that many of you, like me, have been shocked and appalled by these events. While Scotland has, so far, been spared from any rioting, it is important that we call out racism and xenophobia wherever they exist. Every individual has the right to feel safe and valued, and we must stand together in condemning all forms of hate, discrimination, and violence.

UK colleges and universities take great pride in being international, diverse, and welcoming environments, and the values of equality and inclusivity are ones that we all hold dear.

At Al-Maktoum College, I take great pride in our commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive community that promotes wellbeing and success for everyone, irrespective of their background, with a strict zero tolerance for hate.

I understand that the events we have witnessed may be distressing and that members of our community may be feeling anxious about the situation. Please know that we are here to support you. I encourage everyone to check in with one another, offering your support and friendship whenever possible.

For students who feel impacted by the situation, please reach out to the student admin team, where guidance and assistance can be arranged.

For colleagues, please know you can access help and support via your line manager or through our free counseling service (through the University of Dundee Counselling Service).

Both students and staff can use our Feedback barcodes to report any form of harassment, bullying, and discrimination. Reports can be made anonymously or with contact details.

As always, my door is open to you. Please feel free to reach out to me or any member of the College Management Team if you need assistance or have any concerns.

Very best wishes,

Dr Abi Abubaker

Principal and Vice-Chancellor
