Amira's story

I’m 44 years old and I’m from Egypt. I love keeping active in volunteering services, trying to do my very best to help and support others. My hobbies include planting, music, reading, and spending time with kids. I also enjoy writing poetry and drawing.

My advice to any students who are considering continuing their education journey is that, I believe, studying at Al-Maktoum College is a great opportunity. I would like to encourage you to go, no matter your age, background, or previous experience. You will find the support you need and it's a decision you won't regret.

Tell us about your experience studying with Al-Maktoum College

I’ve been at Al-Maktoum College since 2020, having started studying on the HNC in Management and Leadership course, and I am now working towards a PhD as well. I decided to try studying management and leadership at Al-Maktoum College to refresh my knowledge in this field before starting my PhD journey at the University of Dundee. I was attracted to the College because of the quality of its teaching staff and also for its small class sizes. This allowed for a more friendly and intimate learning experience guided by helpful and professional teaching staff.

What was your favourite part of the course?

I was particularly impressed by the professionality in which the College managed to deliver its courses online during the lockdown. There was a range of complex and interesting topics to cover, and despite the disruption of Covid-19, the College continued to engage its students through a variety of online teaching methods. I’d also mention that the course material and resources were sufficient. My lecturers were extremely supportive, encouraging us to maximise our learning. It was also very helpful that each lecture was recorded and that students are able to rewatch and access learning materials whenever they needed them.

Do you have any fond memories/experiences from your time at the College that you would like to share?

The best memories I would like to share from my time at Al-Maktoum College is when I was given the opportunity to represent the student body, as a Student Ambassador. I enjoyed the trust and enthusiasm from the staff members as well as enjoyed listening and learning from admin and recruitment staff. We, as students, were always greeted with cheerful faces and it made us feel comfortable and welcome.

What are your plans for the future?

I have now started my PhD journey in Management and Leadership at the University of Dundee. I’m looking forward to this journey and am confident that Al-Maktoum College will always be there in the background to support me. I had a very positive experience at the College and am sure that I will again, visit soon.

Do you have any advice for prospective students?
